Go Figure! Sketch Night At Rainy Day Art Supply

This past Saturday night was the Go Figure sketch night at Rainy Day Art Supply. November's model was Rebbecah Sharpe a Mandolorian.

I also draw some of the artists from time to time, as the one on the right attests.

Besides our host Kelly O'Hare, some of the artists present were Darin Palmer, Jay Fosgitt, Kevin Minor, Erin Legget, Darian Wolfe, Anne Garavaglia, Dug Rusin, and Scott Zambelli. Check out their artwork!

Sketch Night At Rainy Day Art Supply

This past Saturday I was at Rainy Day Art Supplies for their Go Figure! live model sketch night. It's usually a good time and this one was packed! It was good to see so many artists there having a good time and sketching for a couple of hours. As always, our host Kelly O'Hara made us behave (somewhat. I think she likes a dose of chaos) and we had another fine model in Megan Morse.

That night was working well for me (hence, more scans!) The blue colored pencil was flowing well.

This guy... No, just kidding, he was just fine, but with it being so packed with sardine artists he was planted on a pew somewhat in front of me. He seemed cool. Brian, I believe his name was.

Really exaggerated the legs on the left hand sketch. I'd like to say that it was intentional, because I think it came out well, but let's just chalk this one up to being a happy accident.

Very happy with the one on the left. The right hand sketch is a blind contour drawing. I love doing them.

These two are not so blind contour drawings.

I don't draw hands well at all. Happy with this one.

So, as I said, these sketch nights are very fun and worthwhile, for sure. Among the fine Detroit area artists present were Jay Fosgitt, Darin Palmer, Jim Anderson, Jeff Sornig, John Wood, Kevin Minor, John Martin, Anne Garvaglia, Jay Shimko and Terrell Culbert. Check out their art! Hopefully, I'll get to know some of the other regulars, as they are very good artists, as well. And they are patient with the rest of us.

Fantasticon Mt. Pleasant

This Saturday and Sunday I will be in Mt. Pleasant, MI at the Soaring Eagle Casino for their Fantasticon show. If you are in the area and/or at the casino and want to spend more money, stop on by. There will be quite a few Michigan artists on hand, such as The Minor Brothers, Jay Jacot, Michael Peters and Bryan Mazeny among others.I've heard that they have sold over a thousand tickets, so that's good to hear!

*Edit: The Minor Brothers have canceled their appearance at this show.

Stoopid Stuf: Yellow Snow

So, the new Stoopid Stuf book is out and is called Yellow Snow and it is filled with amazingly stoopid toons. The cover has a couple of easter eggs, so maybe they will be apparent, maybe not. It is available on Amazon and from Kevin and myself. You can contact us directly or come see us at a show near you.

Super Nonny, Part Four

Here are the remaining pages for the Super Nonny story that I worked on and was written by David Himmel and colored by Kevin Minor. It's a fun tale and I hope that you enjoyed it, as well!

Super Nonny, Part Three

A printed copy of the Super Nonny comic book that I worked on arrived yesterday and I love how it turned out! I still get excited to see my stuff in print and I hope I always will. Of course, I will. It's one of the joys of doing what I do.

Below are the next three pages of the ten page comic that was written by David Himmel (for his family) and colored by Kevin Minor.

Super Nonny, Part Two

Here are pages 1-3 of the Super Nonny comic written by David Himmel, penciled and inked by moi, and colored by Kevin Minor. This was a personal story done as a gift for David's family, so won't be available to the masses. But, he was more than happy for me to share it, so here is the first installment.

Wizard World Cleveland

This weekend (Fri-Sun) you can find me in Ohio for the Cleveland Comic Con. I hear it's a good show and this will be my first appearance there, so come on by Artists Alley and say hello. I will have books, prints, sketch cards, original art and I'll be doing commissions, as well.

Michigan will be well represented with fellow artists The Minor Brothers (Matt, Jake and Kevin), Bill Pulkovski, Dom Riggio just to name a few.

Super Nonny

So, I spent a lot of last year working on a 10 page comic book commission for David Himmel, who is a writer and the editor-in-chief for Chicago Health Magazine. Super Nonny is a story about his grandmother and great-grandmother to the four children in the story, David's nephews and niece. At first I was little hesitant to take the job, with this being a personal story with likenesses and all. But, after reading the script I was more than happy to do this one. David created not just a cute little story about his Nonny, but a witty and charming tale that can be enjoyed by anyone who reads it. I guess that is what being a good writer is all about.

Over the next coming weeks I will show the story in it's entirety. Super Nonny, written by David (a gift for his family), pencils and inks by yours truly and my Stoopid Stuf co-hort Kevin Minor helped out with the interior colors. I did the cover colors seen above and knew it would take me forever just to make it look passable, so I needed someone with better skills than I.

Visigoths

Like my last Visigoth post, this one a minor transgression, but since I haven't posted much in between doing some larger projects, a bunch of sketch cards, a weathervane and cleaning and restoring statues, here's a quick sketch from a brief encounter.

As I was leaving Kevin's house this afternoon, there were a few younger teenagers on their bikes in the street right at the end of the driveway. I actually had to back up farther and go around them as they wouldn't move. As I driving by, one of the kids nods his head to me with the usual "I'm a arrogant dumbfuck' look that one gets when dealing with such a lot. I had the impulse to roll down my window and give him a teachable moment and tell him that little boy assholes only impress other little boy assholes.

But, I took the high road.

Sigh.

Stoopid Stuf Snail

I thought I'd show my original drawing for the cover of the black and white collected edition (50 Shades Of Stoopid) of our Stoopid Stuf cartoons. I liked the spacey look on the snail.

Available from either of us and Amazon.

Stoopid Stuf: 50 Shades Of Stoopid

As with American Heaven, Kevin Minor and myself will released a second book this weekend at the Motor City Comic Con. This one will be both Stoopid Stuf books collected together, but in black and white (and shades of stoopid) at a cheaper price than the full color versions. This book is also available on Amazon.

Stoopid Stuf: American Heaven

Because you demanded it (well, maybe just because we wanted to), Kevin Minor and I have released our second Stoopid Stuf book, entitled American Heaven. As with our last book, there is a toon inside that expands on this premise. We are unveiling the new book this weekend at the Motor City Comic Con in Novi, MI, but if you are impatient, you can get it now on Amazon.

We are also releasing a black and white collection of the first two books and that will be called 50 Shades Of Stoopid. But, more on that later in the week.

Back To School

Here is last week's Stoopid Stuf before colors and text by Kevin. A little stab at the current state of parents and teachers. Make sure to head on over to the web site to check out more stoopid comics. Updated every Friday for your viewing pleasure.

Bananibal Lecter

Here is last week's Stoopid Stuf cartoon sans color and text. This one has to be one of my favorites of all the cartoons that we have produced. I don't know why, it just makes me giggle. Sometimes humor hits you over the head and sometimes it's very subtle, like this one. Head on over to Stoopidstuf.com to see it with Kevin's colors and make sure to pick up a copy of Bifocals and Beer Goggles, the first Stoopid Stuf collection.

Cherry Capital Comic Con

I will be leaving in a couple of hours for Traverse City where I'll be a guest at the Cherry Capital Comic Con. I will be at table #509 in artists alley and will have copies of the Stoopid Stuf cartoon book, Bifocals and Beer Goggles. Kevin Minor will be on hand as well, to sign copies.

A couple of my artist buddies did the posters for this year's show, Jay Fosgitt and Jeff Manley. It's a great one-two punch and I think the best posters yet, so pick up your copy this weekend.

See you there!

Bifocals And Beer Goggles

These two beauties are the front and back covers of the Stoopid Stuf book before colors and text. You can see some of the changes that were made and effects added to make the covers look as completed. The book debuted this past weekend at the Motor City Comic Con, but if you didn't snag a copy then you can always pick one up through either Kevin or I and also on Amazon.com.
