John Hurt

Just a quick sketch of a wonderful actor who left us the other day. Kane, John Merrick, Jesus, Winston Smith, Ollivander and Trevor Bruttenholm were among some of his more memorable roles (at least for me).

I tried to be creative with the negative space here, but he does look a bit bald, doesn't he....?

Frozen Fish Fiasco Trophies

So, here is what I have been working on for the past few months (with a fractured tibia, to boot!). I was asked to make custom trophies for this years Frozen Fish Fiasco charity event to benefit the ice rink at Clark Park in Detroit. The event, which is organized by Dom Riggio will take place this weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, including a game between the Red Wings alumni and the Detroit UAW.

Here is the finished look, complete with base. Photo by Dom Riggio.

The trophies were done in a cold cast bronze process. They are cast in a resin with actual bronze powder in it and can be buffed to look like an actual bronze sculpture. The whole process was a learning experience for me and I had help with the mold making process from my partner in crime at Venus Bronze Works, Nick Katsavrias and the folks at TFB Plastics, who did the actual pours for me. I'll do a post about the whole process later on.

Here are all 12 trophies upon completion and waiting to be picked up.

When Dom first approached me to do these trophies, he wanted a replica of The Spirit Of Detroit statue by Marshal Fredericks. I thought that there might be some legal issues with doing this, but more importantly, he already had this great logo designed by Ryan Craig, a local graphic designer. So, I did up some sketches based on that design and we went from there.

So, if you want to watch some hockey and support a good cause, get over to the Frozen Fish Fiasco website for further details and head on down to Clark Park this weekend!

And yes, this is another fish sculpture from me...

Motown Mojo Live

Tune in tonight to Motown Mojo Live from 7-9 where I'll be discussing the making of the trophies for this weekend's Frozen Fish Fiasco charity hockey event to keep Detroit's Clark Park operational. Dom Riggio is the host and alongside me there will be writer Montilee Stormer and musical guest The Full Monty.

I'll have more about the trophies here later in the week.

And so it begins....

Here that sucking sound?

It's not the sound of the swamp being drained, it's something far more sinister.

A vampire has to be invited into one's home to be able to enter..... oh, wait.... never mind. It already happened.

Fleetwood, Part Two

So, here are the remaining cartoons of my fledgling junior high school attempt at a comic strip. Sorry. I know that I only threatened to spring the rest on you, but I am a cruel cartoonist who reigns supreme in these parts. It's a kingdom of one, but hey, what the heck...

Fleetwood

So, going through some old drawings looking for other stuff I found these little gems from my sordid cartooning past. In the waning days of 9th grade as I sat in Study Hall with some other burgeoning hoodlums I created my very first cartoon strip. I only had two characters and I originally named the St. Bernard (the star) Fleetwood and the sailor who found him, Mac. So clever was I.

Oh, and at this time I thought Garfield was hilarious, so you can see why this was so very bad. I did six of these awesome little strips, so I may spring the rest on you very soon. You have been warned.
