Greenland Basking Shark

9x12
watercolor on paper

I was very tempted to stick with an ink sketch for this week's #SundayFishSketch, but had to give another go with the watercolors, just for the sake of the cool colors that a Greenland Basking Shark can give off. The theme, you ask, is large mouthed fish. Basking sharks are getting a lot of love across the inter webs today and rightfully so. They have to have the biggest mouths. I guess I can relate at times...

C Is For Chewbacca...

This is the next installment in my unpublished Star Wars A-Z book. Keep Edward Gorey in mind as you peruse these drawings. He was the inspiration for the manner in which this is presented.

The theme for today's #SundayFishSketch are fish that school together. A little different, but here are a bunch of piranha just chilling with each other, hanging out, waiting for a nibble or two.

B Is for Boba...

B is for Boba who fell into a
Sarlacc pit meant to be food.

This drawing was brought to you by the letter B and is from an unpublished Star Wars A-Z book that I wrote and illustrated in an Edward Gorey manner.

Northern Pike Sketch

Fish that at times eat birds is the theme for today's #SundayFishSketch. This here is a northern pike going after a duck, which at times, they apparently do.

A Is For Ackbar...

A is for Ackbar who knew that
they could not repel fire of that magnitude.

So, a few years ago, I wrote and illustrated an A-Z Star Wars book done in an Edward Gorey way, including keeping it back and white. In my search for publication, in which I knew would be next to impossible, even with some of the connections that I have, there were quite a few moments where I thought I'd find success. Alas, that has not worked out. Yet. I withheld showing a lot of these drawings believing that it might not be wise to do so. I have changed my view on that, or had it changed for me, as the case turned out. So, from time to time I'll be showing some of these drawing, even if they never see print. I even had a few copies printed up just to see how it would look in book form and have something to give to publishers for the very same reason.

The book is called Yoda is Small and Other Such Utterances.

The day is almost over, but it's still World Elephant Day here in the west, so Happy Elephant Day!

Garden Eels Sketch

5x8
ink in sketchbook

Today's #SundayFishSketch theme are fish that don't really look like fish. My choice?  Garden eels. They are a rather cool looking bunch and have a lot of character in their faces. Some look happy, some look pissed off, but all just hanging out looking for a meal. I'm assuming.

Seacow Character Pose Sheet.

So, the children's book class that I took through the Society of Visual Storytelling has concluded and I would highly recommend taking a course through these guys (Jake Parker, Lee White, Will Terry). Although, the course has finished, we the students can take our time with the lessons and the recorded classes will be there fo as long as they are, which is good, since the going has been tough since going down with a drawing hand wrist injury (getting better!).

The next character that I worked up in my version of Jack & the Beanstalk is the cow. Or, in my take, the seacow. So, Jack will take a manatee to town to try and sell.

Catfish Sketch

8x5
from sketchbook

Today's theme for #SundayFishSketch are catfish. I was going to do a red-tailed catfish, since one tried to eat my hand once, but went with a larger Jim Henson muppet looking one. He had to be inspired somewhat, right?
