Iron Man Process

I don't normally show process shots of my work, maybe I think that it will jinx it somehow. Hell, I don't know. So, why not show it? Anyways, this commission will be done as an ink wash and this is the pencil layout. I started in on the darkest inks the other day and will probably hold off on doing the eyes, beard and eyebrows until last, since they are thinner lines and smaller bits and I can build up the gradation if needed. Yeah, that's how I'll do it...

Max

So... work has picked up, so between that and some personal projects, I decided that I needed more to do. So, I enrolled in an online children's book course taught by illustrators Jake Parker, Lee White and Will Terry through the Society of Visual Storytelling. The first week's assignment is picking three established books and straight up copying the style of that illustrator. We have to do 4 characters, 2 props and 2 full page/spreads. Easy peasy.

This was very fun to do and makes you really look at how things were done, what choices were made and if you can figure it out, why those choices were made. I'll be coloring this one, as well.

This is from Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, of course.

Some Sketch Card Commissions

These three are a few Artist Proof commissions that I did last year for a collector. I had these blanks left over from an ESB set from years ago, so I was very glad to do something on them.

Pipedreams #16

I haven't posted one of these in awhile, so here is the 16th strip from a cartoon called Pipedreams that Darin Palmer created way back when, but had never shown. The strip follows the exploits of a collection of factory workers and was based entirely on the dump that we worked for at the time. Most of the names were changed to protect the guilty. Here, Melvin gets caught up in the plant supervisor King Koerber's self admiration. Darin and I wrote these together and I penciled them and he inked them.

May The 4th Be With You

For this 4th's viewing pleasure, I thought I'd share a sketch that I had intended to turn into a 'How To Draw Star Wars' submission for the Star Wars.com feature some years ago. For one reason or another, it never materialized. Duh. I know that I had planned to do something with atmospheric perspective, but can't see this back alley, black market Quarren as an example of that. It could have been any number of things.
