Recently, I rewatched the film My Left Foot with Daniel Day-Lewis. I hadn't seen it it in some time, probably the early 90's, or so. I was very inspired by the story of Christy Brown and did this painting not long after my first viewing of the movie. I dug it up and looked it over some. It's a simple piece, but I still like it. I don't know why I chose to do the foot as a silhouette, but I think it works.

So, this is the finished painting from the black and white colored pencil drawing that I posted a few months ago. A print of this will be ready for Detroit Fanfare this October, so be ready to get your classic monster fix!

This week is the last chance that you will have to see the In A Gallery Far Far Away show at the River's Edge Gallery in Wyandotte. So, get on down river to see all that is sci-fi and pop culture, including the Byzantine-esque General Ursus. The top image is the prelim drawing that I did before the actual painting. That one is not featured at the show.

No Canaries Here

Although, the show actually started last week, tomorrow is the opening for the gallery show entitle In A Gallery Far Far Away. The show is sci-fi/fantasy/pop culture based and features some of Detroit's best illustrators and fine artists, including Alex Buechel, Matt Busch, Anne Garavaggio, Jeremy Hansen, Bill Morrison, Kelly Nemzek, Bill Pulkovski, Jay Shimko and myself. The speed painter Dave Santia will be doing his thing at about seven in front of the gallery. All proceeds from his auctioned paintings will go towards Benefits For Backpacks (I think).

The Boondock Saints

Last October when I went down to Columbus, Ohio for the Mid Ohio Con I talked with quite a few people about the upcoming sequel to The Boondock Saints movie. So, it was there that I hatched the idea to do a Saints painting and get some prints made up to sell at cons and through this here site, as well. Above is what the finished project will look like. The prints will be 13x19 and I should have them available by the first of the year. The original painting is much larger at 20x30 and was done in acrylic washes.

I'm super happy with this painting on so many levels and it's probably one of the better pieces that I've done (if I may say so myself), so I hope that someone finds some enjoyment in it, as well.

Portrait of Diane Kruger

This is one of my recent paintings and it's a portrait of the actress Diane Kruger. The color from the digital pic that I took of it seems to be just a bit off from the original, so maybe I'll post a scan when I do that. I tooled around with color adjustments in photoshop, but all that I managed to do was make her a bright pink and I really don't like to alter things too much from the original unless I have to.

Icarus 1917

Ever since discovering Greek mythology as a kid the story of Icarus has always held a firm grip on me. The cynics out there will tell you that is because I would never listen to their wisdom and in not doing so fell to the obvious doom that always awaits those who fly too close to the sun. It goes much deeper than that and there is so much that even I don't understand about my fascination with the wax winged one. It's a cautionary tale and that's what has always been the important aspect. Maybe I'll "get" it just before they pluck my feathers from the sea, but I doubt it. 

I'm not sure why I chose a German WWI type Icarus. It was just one of those images that got stuck in me noggin awhile back and I went with it. Plus, I like the iron cross.
