Homer Davenport Cartoon Festival

This was my entry in this past weekend's Homer Davenport Cartoon Festival in Silverton, OR, part of the overall Homer Davenport Days celebration. The events purpose other than honoring the great cartoonist Davenport, but to continue the tradition of the editorial cartoon as a means of important expression in the country. An art form that is being trodden upon even as we speak. Those committing atrocities do not want to be questioned, of course.

As my cartoon above represents, none of those children speak the language of Pence and the cruelty that he and his kind justifies, both literally and figuratively.

The Homer Davenport International Cartoon Festival

It's been a long time since I've entered a cartoon competition, so I came up with one and this is my entry for The Homer Davenport International Cartoon Contest held at the annual festival in Silverton, OR. It starts today and goes through Sunday, so if you are in the area, check it out. Then you can let me know how it went!

If you are unfamiliar with Homer Davenport he was a fantastic political cartoonist, active in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. Unfortunately, he died young contracting pneumonia while covering an event of the returning survivors from the Titanic.

He was so good at his job of portraying corrupt politicians that some of them tried to get a bill passed banning political cartoons. "No honest man need fear cartoons" was his rebuttal. Needless to say, he is one of my heroes, not only for his stance against corruption (very topical these days, as ever), but his amazing line work and skills as an illustrator. Fantastic work. Google him!

Homer Davenport Days 2008

In Silverton, Oregon they have an annual celebration in honor of the political cartoonist Homer Davenport. Besides the cartoon contest and exhibition they also have a slew of activities that you can check out here. This here is my inclusion in this year's contest. I remember some time ago, old "Dubbya" was bragging about being a war president (such an honor!), but he was really a downright peace loving kind of guy. I couldn't help but think about how many lives have been lost (by his actions) during his eight year peace reign.
