Gary Reed (1956-2016)

Gary Reed, the founder and publisher of Caliber Press, writer, con promoter, biology teacher and all around great guy passed away yesterday. I haven't known Gary as long as others, but it wasn't long enough. At first, he was a bit intimidating to be around, having done so much in the comic book and publishing industry. The guy was connected, that's for sure. But all of that insecurity passed quickly once you met him and talked with him. And you could talk about all sorts of things with Gary, not just comics. And he listened to you, as well. He always came by to talk at cons, usually a longer chat would ensue. Gary always said hello. He also came out to our sketching events when he could or a gallery show that any one of us were in. Oh, and he shared my disdain for wrestling, ha, ha.

One of the stories that I like to tell about an interaction with Gary involves the illustration above. He was putting together his book Voices From The Deadworld and asked quite a few locals if we's like to be involved. Who could pass that up? The book showcased all the characters, good and bad from the Deadworld series. We could choose a character and could also design our own zombie if we liked to. So, I picked his character Tattoo and wanted to do one of my own, as well. I had this sketch that I did from a few years prior of an old man wearing a black robe with all of these clocks and watches attached to him. I always like the image and thought that it would be cool to make him into a zombie and have a place in the book. So, I presented the sketch to him. His reply?

"Bruce.... what the fuck am I supposed to do with this?"

There was no mistaking his tone in the email as sometimes happens with text. He had that knack, though, being a writer. And using the 'f' word helped too, I suppose.

So, we chatted about it some more and he warmed to it. I think he finally saw what I saw, or maybe he saw my excitement with the character. Either way, he wrote a good backstory for the 'clock zombie' and it made it into the book. My happy moment. I wish I would have saved that email, because I can hear his voice speaking those words in only the way that Gary could.

Above is a pic from a Free Comic Book Day event at Wonderworld Comics from a few years ago.

I'm sad and mad that Gary left us. I think it will feel a bit emptier not seeing him at conventions and I feel like he left us to fumble about in the dark without a kind word, a needed bit of criticism, a joke, ect. Gary will be missed.

My work was done for the story The Picture In The House and above are two of the four that I did. The book features artwork by other artists, as well, including Tim Shay, Demone Anderson, and Tony Miello, to name a few. Early Stories is published by Gary Reed's Caliber Press.

Caliber Rounds Interview

Here is a short interview that I did recently with Travis Mcintire from Caliber Rounds. You can check out their Facebook page here.

1.How did you end up doing work for Caliber Comics?

I helped start a sketch group about five years ago called Motor City Sketch and we had a get         together at Wonderworld Comics in Taylor. Gary had put a call out for a somewhat secret project that he would like to discuss with local creators and that he would be there to talk about it. There was a pretty good turnout as can be imagined. Gary was putting together the Voices From The Deadworld book and wanted it to mainly have Michigan artists in it. I’m not sure how the selection process worked, but I was given the character Tattoo to illustrate and I was able to submit a zombie character of my own design. I had done a sketch a few years before of a hermit type guy with a black trench coat and all these pocket watches attached to it. I’m not sure if he was out of time, had nothing but time or was timeless, but I liked the imagery, so I changed him from a hermit to a zombie and sent it in. There were some funny email exchanges about this character, but in the end Gary wrote up an interesting back story for him. Since Voices of the Deadworld I have been fortunate enough to contribute illustrations for various Gary Reed publications.

2. If you could be the artist for any character or property, what would it be and why?

When I was younger, I would have killed to be the artist for The Amazing Spider-Man. He was by far my favorite character and had all the great artists on that title. Spider-Man had the best costume and would have been great to draw. I’m sure all of the buildings would have given me fits, but I could always see the attraction to drawing that title.

If we are talking about a Caliber character, then I would go with a King Zombie tale. That would be great fun. He lends himself wonderfully to great visuals with the leather biker jacket, red headband, spiked hair, etc. He’s an interesting creature to draw and explore graphically.

These days I tend to lean more to the stories I want to tell. I have three graphic novels that I have been kicking around ideas on for quite some time. They need to be done, but with being busy (which is good) I have a hard time getting to them. So many stories to tell with so little time. There’s that clock zombie coming back to haunt me. So, with that said, I need to set aside time to get these stories told.

3. What’s next on the horizon for Bruce Gerlach?

I am currently working on the third book for the Stoopid Stuf cartoons that I do with my fellow co-conspirator Kevin Minor. We seem to have a good following and were almost picked up by Universal Press Syndicate, plus we are just having too much fun in creating these off the wall and most times cheesy cartoons. It’s what we do.

I am also currently wrapping up a couple of projects for clients, including a ten page comic for a writer in Chicago and a sculpture for someone in Tennessee. I will release details about those when I can.

Also, the clock zombie tells me that a few graphic novels that need to be started…

Storyville

This is an illustration that I did for the Kickstarter rewards for the Storyville graphic novel by Gary Reed and Wayne Reid. The story is set in early 1900's New Orleans in the Storyville (red light) district and involves the murders of prostitutes. In the real life Storyville you could select a lady of the night in one of their "blue books." This would be the type of pic one might see in that book.

So, head on over to the Kickstarter page and help Gary and Wayne put their book out!

Zelda's Zombie Zoo

The other book that will be debuting at Detroit FanFare that I have a piece in is Zelda's Zombie Zoo written by Gary Reed and published by Binary Press. This is an all ages book, so even though it has zombified zoo animals, the gore and rotted flesh was kept to a minimum. So, I've been told. I've seen a few of the other contributor's images and there is a varied collection of zoo animals for your viewing pleasure. I will have copies of this book at my table in artists alley, so stop on by and get your copy this weekend.

The Book Of Tarot

The Hermit
11x14
ink on bristol board

I have a few projects coming to fruition this week, so I will be updating on them throughout the week. The first is The Book Of Tarot, a collection that will make its debut this weekend at Detroit Fanfare in Dearborn, MI. All of the artists in the book will be on hand at the convention to sign their little hearts away. The book was put together by Gary Reed and printed up through his Transfuzion Publishing.

I chose to do The Hermit card and the above image is what it looks like. I wanted to incorporate a few different aspects, such as The Hermit himself, the tale of Diogenes of Athens, which lends itself perfectly with this card and the story of St. Gerlach, a dutch mercenary who lived in an oak tree after his journey from the Crusades. The tree replaces the mountain in the original card.

I've already seen a few pieces from this book and they have all been stellar looking, so if you are into anything Tarot, then this book is for you. Stop on by my table in artists alley and pick up a copy.

Detroit Fanfare 2012

The 3rd Detroit Fanfare kicks off tonight at 6pm and will run until Sunday. Check out the times on their site. Besides myself (you can find me at table 129 in the Great Lakes Ballroom), there will be a whole bunch of Michigan based artists and creators. Of course, there will be artists and such from out of state, as well. And don't forget the celebrities, such as David Prowse, Sam Jones and Michael Jai White, etc.

Voices From The Deadworld by Gary Reed will premiere at this show, which is an anthology of the characters that have appeared over the last twenty years, or so in the Deadworld comic. I have two pieces in the anthology and they are shown above as they will be seen in the book. I have color prints available for the two, as well. The top character is Tattoo and the bottom one is of my own creation, a zombie obsessed with time. I will have copies of the book and prints at my table, as well as my other books and prints, sketch cards and will be doing commissions as requested.

Don't forget to get your official fanfare print by Bill Pulkovski and get them signed by the actors. He did a great job on this one!

Deadworld Sketch Cards

Let's roll with the Halloween theme and show some Deadworld sketch cards, shall we? Above are some of the 50 cards done for the set coming out soon by Breygent. Deadworld is a comic that was originally put out in the late 80's by Caliber Comics. The original stories were written by Stuart Kerr and illustrated by Vince Locke and are now written and published (as was then) by pal and colleague Gary Reed. As many in the industry will testify, Gary Reed is a good guy and I always learn something and enjoy the time spent when in his company. Definitely a straight shooter.

It was a lot of fun to work on this set and explore the many different characters that populate the Deadworld universe. I even made Gary a zombie on a couple of cards.

In a couple of weeks I should have news regarding another Deadworld project that I am a part of as Detroit Fanfare nears.
