A Sketch Of The Controller

I'm currently working on a sketch card set and wanted to work out the poses some before committing to the actual card. I was kind of happy with this here sketch of the Marvel Comics villain The Controller. He was always one of my favorites, with his craggy, sculpted face. Pure evil. I gave him some funky teeth to go along with that beat up, etched face.

Ruby Thursday

6x9
ink on bristol board

This here is a commission from the Sh!tshow Kickstarter that I had at the end of last year. You may have heard about it. This enchanting young lady is Ruby Thursday, the Marvel Comics character that appeared in The Defenders comic book among other titles. An obscure, but interesting character.

Black Panther

6x9
ink on bristol board

For this commission of one of the best comic book characters of all time, I couldn't resist taking a Jack Kirby approach, although I originally did want to use the more modern look, whilst keeping that Kirbyesque feel to it. So, as you can plainly see, no modernity to this at all.

The Black Knight

6x9
ink on bristol board

The Black Knight is the next commission from from the Kickstarter that I ran at the end of last year. I wasn't going to be that strict with what I offered and allowed any character to be requested, not just politicians. But, I did and am drawing them in that style. And it made for more fun for me.

So, this version of the Black Knight (also known as Sir Percy of Scandia) is not the same as the Marvel Comics version. This guy was an ancestor of the later Marvel character and this Black Knight, although created by Stan Lee and Joe Maneely, made his first appearance for Atlas Comics, which was a precursor of Marvel. I used the Joe Maneely design as requested. It was  lotsa fun using all that ink!

Iron Man Process

I don't normally show process shots of my work, maybe I think that it will jinx it somehow. Hell, I don't know. So, why not show it? Anyways, this commission will be done as an ink wash and this is the pencil layout. I started in on the darkest inks the other day and will probably hold off on doing the eyes, beard and eyebrows until last, since they are thinner lines and smaller bits and I can build up the gradation if needed. Yeah, that's how I'll do it...

Patton M.O.D.O.K.

As much as I'm looking forward to watching the animated M.O.D.O.K., I have to say that I was a bit disappointed that we will not see Patton Oswalt's face as the A.I.M. super villain.

Iron Man 2 Artist Proof Sketch Cards

This week's Artist Proof sketch cards are from the Iron Man 2 set put out by Upper Deck. They gave me something like 15 AP cards for this one, so I did them over time. The first ones, more realistic from 2010 and the 2014 ones a more cartoony style. The links are below:

Admiral Ackbar Commission

This was my favorite commission that I did at the Wizard World Chicago convention this past weekend. It was based off one one my sketch cards and wanted to make it better if I could, add a few more details that weren't on the card. The background is a different color, as well.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Sketch Cards, Part Two

Here are a few more of the sketch cards that I did for Upper Deck's Guardians of the Galaxy set. I have a few more to post and they will be larger 5x7 cards.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Sketch Cards

These are some of my Guardians of the Galaxy sketch cards done for the soon to be released set by Upper Deck (that empty space was a rejected card, hence not being able to see it). These images are from the Marvel Comics (old and new) and not from the movie, although it's being tied in with that, of course.

Agent Phil Coulson

This was done recently as a part of a commission. Sometimes, I'll add an extra sketch card into the mix if time allows or if it just seems like a good idea at the time. So, Agent Phil.

Iron Man 2 Artist Proof Sketch Cards

I've had these Iron Man 2 Artist Proof blanks from the Upper Deck set sitting around for some time now, so I decided to finish them up and get them out their. I did the first eight back in 2010 when the set was released and just finished the last seven this past week. There's a difference in styles, as you can see, from a more realistic look to the cartoon one. If anyone is interested in obtaining one of these before they hit ebay or some other such site, send me a message or an email.

A Recent Commission

In this recent commission, the client wanted a bikini clad heroine in combat with the Marvel villain, The Spot. As with a recent post for the same client, I am showing the inks and then with colors. It's always fun to work on stuff like this.

Elektra/Bullseye Mashup

Back in May at the Cherry Capital Con while pining away the time in between commissions and monster sales, my bud and fellow cartoonist Jay Fosgitt and I did this Elektra and Bullseye mashup. I provided the Bullseye, then Jay provided the wonderfully drawn Elektra. He did a fantastic job, dontcha' think? Jay, of course, is the creator and genius behind the Bodie Troll comic book and if you haven't checked it out yet, you should probably do so. In earnest.

Some Sketch Covers

I did these two sketch covers last May up in Traverse City at the Cherry Capital Con during some downtime. I tried to experiment with my line work some, especially with the Juggernaut.

More Sketch Covers

I haven't done too many of these sketch cover thingies, but after attending Wizard World Chicago back in August I can certainly see the potential for them. I'm sure it depends on the show, but for that one I did alright with the covers. So, while I was there I drew up a couple more to replace the ones that I sold and were commissioned to do. I will have these on hand at this month's Detroit Fanfare if anyone is interested in them!
