Mercury In Powder

I finished reading Bleak House by Charles Dickens a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the last 300 pages, or so. I thought that Dickens humor and use of words in describing situations and a person's character to be most appealing. I loved how he would refer to a footman as a 'Mercury in Powder' and I couldn't help but visualize them frantically running around with winged ankles and powdered wigs trying to catch that carriage or front door. Thus, a sketch.

LOTR Arts Article

Recently, I was asked to right up an article about my experiences drawing on the Lord of the Rings Masterpieces II sketch card set put out by Topps some time ago. The sight, which is called LOTR Arts is dedicated to all things Lord of the Rings art wise, from a collectors and an artists point of view. 

So, I was also encouraged to write about my career, as well, which was good, since I don't think that I had enough to maintain anything interesting with just the LOTR sketch cards, so I did up a brief summary of my career so far, trying to hit on all the areas that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of. I'm not sure it's all that interesting, but if you are so inclined you can see it here. It's the first article. And be sure to check out the other articles by collectors and artists, as well as the other areas of the site. 

The above sketch card is the only card that I ever kept for myself, being that it was from the first set that I ever worked on.

George Herriman

As a kid I was every much familiar with George Herriman's Krazy Kat, but until recently just hadn't acknowledged the amount of influence that his work had on my own. I must have been paying more attention than I thought. His linework seemed quick, but had purpose and did everything that linework is supposed to do in a cartoon. His topics were and are topical and I'm more than a bit surprised at how well his work holds up today. I methinks that's why they are considered classics.

Visigoths

I haven't done one of these in awhile and everyone knows that there's a whole lotta stupid out there, but this guy was all kinds of special. I was driving down a very busy road in a blizzard this morning when I see this guy walking towards me. In traffic. Cars swerving to avoid hitting him, sliding all over the place. So, walking in traffic, in a snowstorm is better than getting wet feet walking on the sidewalk? And to top it off, he was dressed for the weather, snowsuit, boots and all. And still he walks in traffic. I swear, common sense left our society sometime ago. 

Oh, and he gave me a dirty look. All I could think of was Sheriff Buford T. Justice lines...
