Homer Davenport Days

This here cartoon is my inclusion to the Homer Davenport International Cartoon Contest. It's all part of a festival that is held every year in Silverton, Oregon honoring the life and works of the early 1900's political cartoonist Homer Davenport. The festival will run from August 3rd to the 5th. To find out more about the frolicking festivities go to their website at www.davenportdays.com

I aimed this cartoon at our fun loving president and his total lack of said dignity, but it could really apply to a lot of people.

Oh, and my apologies to the illustrator who originally did the I WANT YOU spot for the Army. His name escapes me at the moment. This cartoon could not have been done without him.

  1. Hey Bruce, nice rendition. :) The name you're looking for is Montgomery Flagg.

Congrats on the new website by the way. I enjoyed meandering through it all. I'm looking forward to getting to meet ya at the Comic Con!

  2. Wow! Excellent pen work! Your work continues to impress me, Bruce. This is well done and I like the idea...the poke at our "fun loving president."

Where's comic con going on, by the way.

  3. Mike: Yes, Montgomery Flagg! I knew that I knew it, but just couldn't think of it and was too lazy to look it up.

I look forward to meeting up with you as well. Julien too. What days are you going to be there? If you have any suggestions on when and where, let me know.

Ana: Ha, ha, "W" was the inspiration the whole way!

The comicon is in San Diego from July 25th (preview night) to the 29th. It should be quite an experience being my first time and all. So, are you going to get on your private lear jet and zoom on down?

  4. ahhhh...too far! If it were happening in SF, maybe I'd get past my introversion to go...not really a comicon artist am I though.

I'll be waiting for all the wonderful photos and stories though when you come back.

  5. HaHa! good one

Dignity? What's that. I have a vague memory of this concept.. It's hiding somewhere behind Scooter Libby and Paris Hilton I think.

  8. Ana: I hear ya on the introversion part. This is actually a big step for me and something I wouldn't normally think to do, but the opportunity presented itself and I would have been a fool to say no. I'm actually feeling some anxiety as we creep closer!

There will be pictures and hopefully many fun stories!

Anajo: I think I've heard of that dignity somewhere before, too! If it's hiding anywhere near Paris Hilton it's got to be hiding deep! I'm sure many have looked.

Dinesh: Thanks, man, and if I see Sergio Aragones I'll try to get a picture of him and post it here.

Jacqueline: Why thank you! I really should do more inkwork, as I like doing it.

  10. Well good for you that you're going! I think what would be hardest for me is actually meeting people from bloggerville, in person... it's just the thought of showing my face after I've embarassed myself one too many times here in cyberspace!

    Take lots of pictures!

  11. ha, ha, I've embarrassd myself SO many times in any space, but I'm still excited about going and meeting up with some of the people that I've chatted to on-line for a while now. besides, I think that you'd do just fine.

You could always talk about cooking, hehe...

  12. Dinesh, if Sergio has the hiccups then I'll have to tell him who's to blame, ha, ha.

  13. Sadly, my dignity was tagged as a security threat and taken away. But I did get a nifty yellow ribbon magnet to proudly displace my support for whatever I am told to support.

So I have that much going for me.

  14. And I'm told that it was replaced by what the "higher ups" call "Dugnity." Don't worry, everything will be scripted for you.
